Hot Peppers

By Roger Simpson (1947-2015)

People who raise and eat hot peppers are a subculture of their own. Even within pepper heads, there are those who pride themselves on only eating the hottest peppers. This article will attempt to explain to ordinary folks the differences between varieties of these old and useful plants. As with most of our food plants, the origin of peppers or chilies is the new world. Scientists believe that wild hot peppers were first located in South America in what is now Brazil and Bolivia. Birds spread them to the rest of Central America and Mexico where they were domesticated. Birds have no heat receptors in their mouth or digestive tract. This is important because, as humans know, hot peppers burn at both ends. Continue reading

From the JMG Kids and Teachers: Thank you to everyone that supported our booth at the Plant Sale. We netted over $500! That will go a long way to support JMG Camp and our other educational activities. We couldn’t run this program without your support! And to further support the club, we are selling our T-shirts for $12. Our new design with the crayon flowers is our 3rd grade winner, Annetta Copas. Half of that money goes back into materials for our clubs. To order one, email us at scjrmg@gmail.com. Dixie, Casey, Becky, Tammie, Sarah, Leeann, Shannon Our Junior Master Gardener Camp will be June 2 & 3 at Bridgemont Camp in Wears Valley. This is an overnight camp, with the option for campers to stay one night or just be day campers. Most will be staying. Our main time for all campers will be 9:00 am to 3:00 pm each day. Our evening schedule for those staying the night will be from 3:00 to 10:00. This will be for about 20 kids, middle school age. Our theme this year is Nature Conservation and we are currently working on programming and activities. Do you have a program or activity on conservation you would be willing to share with our kids? Would you like to come and just be extra helping hands? You are required to have filled out the paper work and go through the child abuse training at the Extension Office. We will soon have a supply list that we will be sharing, so watch for that to see if you can donate any needed items. Please contact Tammie Browning at shallywag@yahoo.com if you have questions or are interested in helping.

Jr. Lunch and Learn Series

Jr. Lunch & Learn Series We need extra hands to help with this series for students at the King Family Library. Classes will be held every Wednesday in June 11:00am to 1:00pm. Kids will bring their lunch and eat while enjoying a lesson. Then it will be hands on time with an activity each week. We average around 40 kids each week and adults like to stick around too. The more helping hands we have on deck, the easier things go. If you would like to help one or multiple, please contact Tammie Browning at shallywag@yahoo.com .
